Australian Markets I Visited Last Year

Last year I set myself a challenge to visit at least one Australian market every month throughout 2017.

My goal was to visit at least 12 Australian markets throughout the year and one a month seemed like a good idea at the time.  As you will see, my challenge was a huge success for the first half of the year and then life took over.  I still easily achieved my 12 markets but I wasn’t able to visit as many “new” markets as I’d hoped.

Oh well, there’s always this year …

Here’s how my challenge went:

January

I have to be honest and admit that as it was so hot during January last year, and as I wasn’t well, January was market free.  I was however spending lots of time planning my own River & Wren Markets!

February

(1)  Capital Region Farmers Market – Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

I visited this market with a girlfriend and you can read about it here.

(2)  Bright Markets, Bright, north eastern Victoria

My daughter and I did a day trip to Bright and you can read about it here.

March

I was fortunate to take a trip to Sydney during March to go to an Adele concert.  While in town I took advantage of some time to visit a few markets and you can read about it here.

(1)  Paddington Markets (my market crush!) – Sydney, New South Wales

(2)  Balmain Markets – Sydney, New South Wales

(3)  Bondi Markets – Sydney, New South Wales

(4)  River & Wren Markets – Wagga Wagga, New South Wales (but this probably shouldn’t really count, as being the market manager I have to be at this market!!)  Our first market of the year was a fabulous success and you can read about it here.

April

(1)  Millthorpe Markets – Millthorpe, New South Wales

(2)  Long Track Pantry Markets – Jugiong, New South Wales

(3)  River & Wren Markets (Mother’s Day Market) – Wagga Wagga, New South Wales

May

(1)  Old Bus Depot Markets (my old haunt when I lived in Canberra), Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

My daughter and I made a special trip to Canberra to visit the market as they were running activities alongside the market and we did a twine making workshop which was so much fun!

June

Another trip to Sydney when I caught up with a girlfriend and we explored the markets of the Inner West before a Sunday visit to  Bondi Beach.

(1)  Rozelle Collectors Market – Sydney, New South Wales

(2)  Balmain Markets – Sydney, New South Wales

(3)  Bondi Markets – Sydney, New South Wales

(4) Handmade Canberra, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

My daughter played in a hockey tournament in Canberra over the June long weekend and Handmade Canberra just “happened” to be on just over the road (well, almost over the road)!  Yay!

(5)  River & Wren Markets (Winter Wonderland Market) – Wagga Wagga, New South Wales

August

(1)  Paddington Markets – Sydney, New South Wales

A trip to Sydney is not quite ‘right’ without a visit to Paddington Markets!

(2)  River & Wren Markets (our 3rd Birthday Market) – Wagga Wagga, New South Wales

How did three years come around so quickly?!

September

(1)  Sustainable Living Festival at the Lutheran School Wagga Wagga, New South Wales.

My daughter’s school changed it’s traditional school fete into a sustainable living festival and as I was one of the organisers of the first festival, it’s a date not to be missed!  And of course there’s a market to explore!

October

(1)  CMRI Christmas Fair – Wagga Wagga, New South Wales

November

(1)  River & Wren Markets (Christmas Market) – Wagga Wagga, New South Wales

Our biggest market EVER!

December

(1)  River & Wren Markets (Christmas Market) – Wagga Wagga, New South Wales

Oops …. and then this market became our BIGGEST MARKET EVER!!

Regularly throughout the year

(1)  Riverina Producers’ Market – Wagga Wagga, New South Wales

Our weekly farmers market for fresh and local food.

Although I didn’t manage to attend all the markets I planned to visit, I enjoyed the markets that I did explore.  Perhaps I should have repeated the challenge this year, but I’m working on a few too many other projects at the moment to be popping away to markets every month.  But I’ll continue to find the local market when I do travel out of Wagga Wagga.

Did you get to explore some interesting Australian markets last year?  Or markets in other countries?
